How Long Does a Lash Lift Last?

By Lash Studio Finder editorsLast updated · 6 min read
Quick answer

A lash lift typically lasts about 6 to 8 weeks. The lift itself is permanent on each lash, but lashes shed and regrow on a natural cycle, so the effect fades gradually as new, straight lashes replace the lifted ones. Keeping lashes dry for the first 24 to 48 hours helps the curl set properly.

Six to eight weeks is the figure you will see on most salon menus, and it is a fair expectation. Some people get closer to four or five weeks, a few get ten. The difference is rarely about the salon’s lotion and almost always about two things: how fast your own lashes turn over, and what happens in the first two days.

How long does a lash lift usually last?

Most people see the full effect for the first three to four weeks, a softer but still visible lift for the following two to four, and by around week eight the lashes look much as they did before. There is no moment when the lift “wears off”. Each lifted lash keeps its shape until it falls out; what changes is how many of your lashes are lifted ones.

That gradual fade is one of the treatment’s advantages. There is no awkward grow-out stage and nothing to remove.

Why does the lash growth cycle matter?

Eyelashes, like all hair, grow in a repeating cycle with three stages:

  • Growth. The lash is actively growing from the follicle.
  • Transition. Growth stops and the follicle shrinks.
  • Resting and shedding. The lash sits in place until it falls out and a new one starts growing beneath it.

Your lashes are not synchronised. On any given day some are brand new, some are mid-growth and some are about to shed, and you lose a few every day without noticing. A lash lift reshapes every lash that is present on the day. Over the following weeks the older ones shed and are replaced by new lashes that were never treated, so the overall look slowly returns to your natural shape.

This is also why results vary between people. If your lashes turn over quickly, your lift fades sooner, and no product can change that.

What shortens a lash lift?

Leaving natural shedding aside, these are the usual reasons a lift drops early:

  • Water, steam or sweat in the first 24 to 48 hours. The bonds in the lash are still settling. A hot shower, a swim, a sauna or a hard workout too soon can relax the curl.
  • Oil-based products. Oil cleansers, heavy eye creams and oil-based makeup removers around the lash line are widely blamed for softening a lift.
  • Rubbing your eyes or sleeping face down. Pressure in the first couple of days can bend lashes out of shape while they set.
  • Waterproof mascara. It is hard to remove without oil or scrubbing, both of which work against you.
  • Under-processing. If the lotion was not left on long enough for your lash type, the lift may be weak from the start. Coarse, stubborn lashes need longer than fine ones.
  • Lash curlers. Clamping a lifted lash can kink it.

How can you make a lash lift last longer?

You can’t slow down lash shedding, but you can make sure the lift sets well and stays in good condition:

  1. Keep lashes completely dry for the first 24 hours, and avoid steam, saunas and swimming for 48.
  2. Skip eye makeup for the first day, and choose water-based mascara after that.
  3. Cleanse gently. Use an oil-free cleanser around the eyes and pat dry rather than rub.
  4. Brush lashes upward once a day with a clean spoolie to keep them neat and separated.
  5. Condition them. Many salons recommend a lash serum or conditioner to keep lifted lashes flexible.
  6. Sleep on your back for the first night or two if you can.

The full routine is in our lash lift aftercare guide.

TipBook your lift at least two days before a holiday, a wedding or anything involving a pool. That covers the setting period and gives you time to go back if something isn’t right.

What does a lash lift look like week by week?

WhenWhat to expect
Day 1–2Lashes can look very curled or slightly stuck together. Keep them dry and leave them alone while the lift sets.
Week 1–3The best stretch. Lashes sit lifted and separated, and most people skip the curler entirely.
Week 4–5New lashes start to appear among the lifted ones. The lift is softer but still clear. Some lashes may point in slightly different directions; brushing helps.
Week 6–8Most of the lifted lashes have shed. This is the usual time to rebook.
After week 8Lashes are back to their natural shape.

How often can you get a lash lift?

Most technicians suggest waiting 6 to 8 weeks between lifts, which lines up with how long one lasts. The reason is simple: if you lift again at four weeks, a good share of your lashes have already been processed once, and treating them a second time can leave them dry, brittle or frizzy.

If you are having lifts back to back through the year, ask your technician how your lashes are holding up. A break of one cycle now and then gives every lash a chance to be replaced by an untreated one.

How long does the tint last?

If you add a tint, expect the colour to fade before the lift does. Lash tint typically lasts around 3 to 6 weeks, depending on your natural colour, how often you cleanse and how much sun and chlorine your lashes see. Some salons offer a tint-only top-up between lifts. See lash lift and tint for how the two work together.

Frequently asked questions

Can a lash lift last 3 months?

Occasionally someone with slow lash turnover sees some lift for 10 to 12 weeks, but that is the exception. Plan on 6 to 8 weeks and treat anything beyond that as a bonus.

Why did my lash lift only last two weeks?

The most common reasons are getting lashes wet or steamy in the first 24 to 48 hours, oil-based products around the eyes, or lashes that were under-processed. Tell your salon; many will check the result and advise what to change next time.

Do lashes go back to normal after a lash lift?

Yes. Lifted lashes shed as part of their normal cycle and the lashes that replace them grow in with your natural shape.

Can I get a lash lift every 4 weeks?

Most technicians advise against it. Re-lifting lashes that are still lifted risks over-processing them. Waiting 6 to 8 weeks is the usual advice.

Does mascara make a lash lift drop faster?

Mascara itself does not undo a lift, but waterproof formulas need oil or rubbing to remove, and that is hard on lifted lashes. A water-based mascara removed gently is the safer choice.
