A lash lift curls your own lashes and needs no upkeep for 6 to 8 weeks; the median price is $85. Lash extensions glue individual fibres to your lashes for more length and volume, start at a median of $130 for a full set, and need fills every 2 to 3 weeks. Choose a lift for natural and low-maintenance, extensions for drama.

Both treatments promise the same thing, waking up with lashes that already look done, but they get there in opposite ways. One works with the lashes you have. The other adds new ones. That single difference drives everything else: how they look, what they cost and how much attention they need.
The prices in this guide are medians taken from salon menus in our directory, checked in October 2026. 6,514 of the salons we list offer both, so you can often ask one technician which they would recommend for your lashes.
What is the difference?
- A lash lift is a perm for your natural lashes. A lotion softens each lash, a silicone rod shapes it upward and a second lotion sets it. Nothing is attached. Often paired with a tint. Read what is a lash lift.
- Lash extensions are synthetic, silk or mink-style fibres glued one by one (classic) or in small fans (volume) to your individual natural lashes, a millimetre or so from the lid. They add length, thickness and curl that your own lashes don’t have.

Which looks more natural?
A lash lift, almost by definition. The result is your own lashes at their best: the same number, the same length, simply pointing up. People tend to notice that you look more awake rather than that you have had something done.
Extensions cover a wider range. A light classic set can look very natural; a volume or mega-volume set is obviously, deliberately glamorous. If you want lashes that are noticeably longer or thicker than your own, only extensions can do that.
Which costs more?
Extensions, and the gap grows over time because of fills. Using the median menu prices in our data:
- One lash lift covers roughly two months: about $85.
- A full set plus two fills covers a similar period: about $270 ($130 + 2 × $70).
Many people fill more often than that, and volume sets cost more than classic, so the real difference is often larger. For detail, see lash lift cost and lash extensions cost.
Which is easier to maintain?
The lift, by a long way. After the first 24 to 48 hours, when lashes need to stay dry, there is nothing to do. You can swim, sweat, rub your eyes and sleep however you like. See lash lift aftercare.
Extensions need a routine: oil-free products around the eyes, gentle daily cleansing and brushing, care when sleeping, and a fill appointment every couple of weeks to replace the ones that have shed. Skip the fills and a set looks gappy within a month.
Which is kinder to your natural lashes?
Either can be fine in skilled hands, and either can cause problems when done badly.
- Lifts use chemical lotions. Left on too long or repeated too often, they can dry lashes out. Spacing lifts 6 to 8 weeks apart avoids treating the same lash twice.
- Extensions add weight and adhesive. Extensions that are too heavy, or stuck to more than one lash, can pull lashes out early. Picking at them does the same.
Both involve products near the eye, so allergies are possible with either. Ask about patch tests, and see a doctor if you have a reaction. This is general information, not medical advice.
How do you choose?
Choose a lash lift if you like a natural look, your lashes are a decent length but straight, you don’t want a maintenance routine, or you want to spend less.
Choose lash extensions if you want more length or volume than you have, you want a specific shape such as cat-eye or doll-eye, or you are happy to return for fills.
Can you have both?
Not on the same lashes at the same time. Some people alternate, wearing extensions for a season and switching to lifts when they want a break from fills. If you are moving from extensions to a lift, have the extensions professionally removed first.

Frequently asked questions
Is a lash lift cheaper than extensions?
Yes, in almost every case. The median lash lift on salon menus in our directory is $85 and needs no fills. The median full set of extensions starts at $130, with fills at a median of $70 every few weeks.
Can I get a lash lift if I have extensions?
Not at the same time. Extensions need to be removed first, and most technicians suggest giving your natural lashes a short break before lifting them.
Which lasts longer, a lash lift or extensions?
A single lash lift lasts about 6 to 8 weeks with no upkeep. Extensions can be kept going indefinitely, but only with fills every 2 to 3 weeks.
Which is better for short lashes?
Extensions, if length is what you want, because they add it. A lift can only show off the length you already have.
Do lash lifts damage your lashes?
Done correctly and not too often, a lash lift should leave lashes in good condition. Over-processing or lifting too frequently can make them dry or brittle, which is why most technicians space lifts 6 to 8 weeks apart.
